PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU OF NIGERIA WAS THE GUEST OF HONOUR AT A JOINT SESSION OF SAINT LUCIA'S PARLIAMENT.

Saint Lucia observed World Parliament Day, also called the International Day of Parliamentarism on June 30.

The observance was special for Saint Lucia this year, as it coincided with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s address to a joint parliamentary sitting of Saint Lucia’s House of Assembly and the Senate.

President of the Senate, Honourable Alvina Reynolds, spoke on the observance.

“Your address to this Parliament today could not have occurred at a more auspicious time, for today is World Parliament Day or International Day of Parliamentarism, an occasion to reflect on the essential role of parliaments and the services we provide as representatives for our people," she said. "Given your own fight in the past for democratic governance in your country, Mr. President, it is a further honour to have you and the Heads of Governments of the OECS Member States observe this day with us."

World Parliament Day was established by the United Nations in 2018 to recognize the role of parliaments in democratic governance.

Also present at the joint sitting of Saint Lucia’s parliament were Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica; Hon. Dickon Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada; Hon. Reuben Meade, Premier of Montserrat; Hon. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis; Mme Bernadette Davis, representative from the Government of Antigua; Hon. Ted Greene representative of the Government of Saint Martin; and Hon. Philip J Pierre, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia.
