TEN SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES WILL PURSUE STUDIES IN VARYING AREAS OF MEDICINE.
Cuba’s commitment to the strengthening of the island’s health sector through the provision of medical scholarships was emphasized this week, when a new cohort of students left the island to undertake studies in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean nation.
The ten scholarship awardees will pursue studies in varying areas of medicine, eight of which are first degrees and two pursuing post graduate studies.
They gathered recently to receive their packages and to meet briefly with Cuban Ambassador to Saint Lucia, H.E Bernardo Toscano Sardinas, and the Minister with responsibility for Education, Hon. Shawn Edward.
Ambassador Sardinas addressed the students: "We hope that you study very hard and that you will return to your country with all the knowledge necessary to support the Saint Lucian people."
Minister Edwards reminded the scholarship awardees to make the most of the opportunity.
"We can comfortably find another 200 students in Saint Lucia who are very qualified to embark on the same journey that you are on, but the spaces are limited and that is why you are extremely fortunate. Do not take it for granted. The Government of Cuba, though all the difficulties they have been subjected to, through no fault of theirs have always stood with Saint Lucia," he said.
The minister also conveyed gratitude from the Government and people of Saint Lucia to Ambassador Sardinas for the Republic of Cuba's continued support.
